California doctors can no longer discriminate against gay and lesbian patients based on their religious beliefs, ruled the California Supreme Court in a unanimous decision. The ruling overturned a lower court decision that allowed two Christian doctors to refuse fertility treatments to Guadalupe Benitez, a lesbian.Many gay men feel apprehensive about getting medical help for fear of discrimination. In fact, according to the American Cancer Society, fear of discrimination is one of main reasons gay men have a higher cancer risk. One reader shared his discriminatory doctor experience: "These records say that in 1987, you claimed to be homosexual. Is that still true?" the doctor asked him.
Hopefully, the California ruling will spread throughout the country, setting an example for health care providers and medical professionals everywhere.
