Medical Associations Say "Ex-Gay Therapy" Based on Ignorance

Health and medical professionals are concerned about ex-gay or "conversion" therapy that seeks to reverse homosexuality in gay youth and adults. In 1973, homosexuality was removed from the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders; however ex-gay ministries are still treating same gender feelings as an illness that can be cured.
The APA states: "The American Psychological Association opposes portrayals of lesbian, gay, and bisexual youth and adults as mentally ill due to their sexual orientation and supports the dissemination of accurate information about sexual orientation, and mental health, and appropriate interventions in order to counteract bias that is based in ignorance or unfounded beliefs about sexual orientation."
