Atlanta Becomes Center for Black Gays

The metropolitan Atlanta area has the largest number of black gay and lesbian couples in the South, according to an Associated Press report. The migration of gay blacks to the South has been attributed to a lower cost of living and deeper cultural roots. However, Emory University's David Malebranche claims that black glbt people move to Atlanta because they "feel ostracized from the white gay community because of racism. People will migrate to a city where there is a lot of black people in general, and then within that you find your niche."
