Schwarzenegger Will Veto Same Sex Marriage Bill
Thursday September 8, 2005
After two successful votes by the California Senate and Legislature, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger threatens to veto the bill that would make California the first state to legalize gay marriage. A spokesperson for Schwarzenegger claims the bill is in direct conflict with Proposition 22- a voter initiative that prevents gay marriage. Human Rights Campaign President Joe Solmonese criticizes Schwarzenegger for giving into pressure from conservative lobby groups. "People are looking for a governor with courage, conviction and the strength to do what is right. That means extending equality to all of California’s families, not appeasing the far right. Does the governor think that his or anybody’s marriage should be subjected to a vote? Public policy is about ensuring that the rights of everyone are secured. Californians want to see leadership and there is still time to show it." read more
