Rice Supports Gay Representation at United Nations

Monday May 22, 2006
According to a 365gay.com report, none of the 2900 non-governmental agencies represented at the United Nations are gay. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, as the representative of the United States, joined Chile, Colombia, France, Germany, Peru, and Romania in support of including the European chapter of the International Lesbian and Gay Association and the Lesbian and Gay Federation of Germany on the U.N. Economic and Social Council. Last February, Rice was heavily criticized for joining Iran, Zimbabwe, China and other nations usually criticized for human rights violations for excluding gay-based organizations on the council. Unfortunately, the new application by the ILGA and LGF was defeated. New support from the U.S. is a move in the right direction, but still not enough to end the UN's discriminatory practices.
