Back to School for LGBT Youth

I remember looking up at the clock every 30 seconds during school anticipating the lunch bell so I could hide in the hallway rush. I wasn't out in high school, but I felt like the word "gay" was written on my forehead. I wondered if the other guys were talking about me in the locker room where they freely used the word "fag" or as they told gay jokes by the lunch tables. The high school cool list excludes short kids, overweight kids, even the "smart" ones. Gay kids definitely fail to make the grade. There are more out gay kids in school today, but the harassment remains the same. Lesbian columnist, Kathy Belge, cites some interesting and not so surprising statistics the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network’s (GLSEN) school climate studies just in time for the school year.
