Interview with Gay Producer/Director Lee Daniels

Tuesday October 24, 2006
What happens when the lines between life and death begin to blur and one's given one last chance at redemption? Where do you turn when the only person you can trust is the one you should fear the most? What happens when the tragedy from a past life won't rest until its story is told? It's easy to think these questions are rooted in the imagination of a filmmaker, but they are actually a reflection of a past Lee Daniels will never forget- abuse at the hands of a gun-strapping father; life in the rough neighborhoods of West Philly where the "nice" lady around the corner was a known contract killer; and a drug-related heart attack that turned his life around. His release: filmmaking; but not your conventional spoon-fed tale. Daniels' films challenge inner boundaries resulting in the transformation of the actors who star in them and the audience glued to the screen.

Daniels cashed in on his second chance by taking care his twin children and bleeding many of the haunting memories from his past through films like the Oscar-winning Monster's Ball, The Woodman, and the controversial Shadowboxer- due out on DVD November 7th. I sat down with Lee Daniels for a fascinating and candid discussion about his work, his life and the future he's still writing.

(1) Sharon Jeffcoat says:

I was listening to Monique host the Micheal Baseden show and Lee Daniels stopped by for a visit, as a writer, I would like to see if there is a way to contact him so he can read the script that I wrote.
