The Gay Man's Guide To The Super Bowl

Friday February 1, 2008
Are you ready for some super excitement this Super Bowl Sunday? The pigskins are ready, the turf fresh and the coin polished for one of the most important games of the year. If you have no idea what I'm taking about then keep reading because this 101 guide to football is for you. If you do have a clue about the game, don't go on the defensive, I have some great info about this Super Sunday for you too.

Q: Ramon, I don't understand what all the Super Bowl hype is about. What's the big deal, anyway?

A: Well, Easy Bake, if you were anything like me when you were a youngling, you were so concerned about making the hors dourves (et, I mean finger foods) for dad's Super Bowl party that you missed the whole point of the game, including the surrounding hype.

The Super Bowl game is to straight men (and ambiguously straight females) as the Oscars are to gays and ambiguously straight male screen fans. Each year the top teams from their respective divisions (more on that later) compete for the top honor in all of professional football: The Super Bowl ring. Super Bowl XLIII, between the Arizona Cardinals and the Pittsburgh Steelers , will take place this Sunday, February 1, 2009, at 6:18pm EST (kick off).

Think of this championship match up as a battle for Best Picture, but instead of being voted on, directors and actors instead have to duke it out for the top prize. Therein lies the spirit of the Super Bowl game: competition and numero uno bragging rights. And for this particular phenomenon called the Super Bowl, the competition is scarcely contained on the field. Pro football fans have spent the entire Fall cheering, cursing, crying and rejoicing for their favorite teams. A win for their team in this big game (the championship game) garnishes not only office bragging rights, but justification for all of the loyal effort put forth throughout the season.

Still a field goal short of understanding football? Don't fret. The pigskin pompous isn't the only one that can enjoy the play-by-play action this year. Here's all you need to know from About.com Guide to Football James Alder: Q: But Ramon, I'm already a football fan. Tell me something I don't already know!

A: Of course, not every gay man is completely void of football knowledge. In fact, there are plenty of gay fans itching for pro ball. I first hand experience. It's known in my circle of friends that Alex, one of my best buddies, is not to be disturbed when the Bears are playing or even being talked about on ESPN. He's beyond a die hard fan and he's openly gay. Of course his team isn't playing for the ring this year, but rest assured he'll be glued to the tube this Sunday.

So, let's spike the stereotypes and get down to Super Bowl business. I pulled some great articles from James Alder, including history, stats and previous Super Bowl MVPs to quench your thirst for more football. May the best team win! Q: I don't like football, but I dig other sports. Where can I find other gay sports fans?

A: Here's a list of my favorite sites for gay sports and outdoor fans: Image © Nikki Johnson.
