Congress Reconsidering Gays in the Military

Friday July 25, 2008
On Wednesday, congress held its first hearing over whether to lift a ban on gays in the military. Currently, under the "don't ask, don't tell" policy, gay men or women are not allowed to serve openly in any U.S. military branch. The meeting, chaired by California House Democrat Susan Davis, was the first post-"don't ask, don't tell" since the laws inception 15 years ago. No members of the Pentagon testified at the hearing, however out Marine Sgt. Eric Alva, the first soldier injured in the Iraq invasion, and other gay and straight veterans spoke of the importance of equal rights in the military.

In an opposing view, Elaine Donnelly, who heads the Center for Military Readiness, told Congress, "We would lose thousands of people if they were told under a zero tolerance policy that you must accept the new paradigm, which is forced cohabitation of men and women with homosexuals in the military." This view is contrary to a 2005 study that showed that the military would see a gain of 41,000 troops and a savings of $200 Million if the anti-gay law was repealed.

Still, according to an NPR report, Democrats say Congress won't act on the measure to repeal "don't ask, don't tell" until a new president is elected.

Which presidential candidate is more likely to support lifting "don't ask, don't tell"?
Here's where Barack Obama and John McCain stand on gays in the military.

Allowing gays into the military is the same as allowing a macho man going into a solo women college. Sooner or later he will end up copulating with somebody.
