Mexico Sex Ed Book Says Gay Is Okay

Monday September 8, 2008
Sex ed information doesn't ignite sexual exploration in our teen years, hormones do. And, even though we've all been heated teens once, some tend to forget that keeping sex ed information under lock and key does more for poor decision making than it does for lessening teen libido. That's why a new sex book in Mexico is causes such a big stir.

Last week, Mexican officials began releasing a sex education book in public schools and libraries that includes information on oral sex, STD's, women's rights and domestic violence. The book also—doomsday music, please—teaches young adults to respect different sexual identities. The ed manual, distributed to more than half a million in Mexico City thus far, was written for teens aged 13 to 18.

I remember what it was like being a young adult eager for information about sexuality. There was little information available, so my searches often ended in frustration and even more confusion than when I started. A real world text on sexuality, such as the one distributed in Mexico, would've been a wonderful starting point.

As you can imagine, the text has some Mexican adults and church figures riled up, causing protest. Thus far, there has been no word that Mexican officials will cease distributing the book. Hopefully, learning about inclusion, safer ways to explore their sexuality, and the dangers of not doing so will encourage young adults to make proper decisions as they develop.
