Haven't Seen Milk Yet? Here's A Teaser.
Monday December 8, 2008
Haven't seen Milk yet? The movie, based on the life and political rise of gay rights activist Harvey Milk, is only playing in select theaters across the country. Director Gus Van Sant brings Harvey Milk to life in a way only he can. The historical film reads and views like a hybrid between a feature and a documentary with sprinkles of actual archived footage of 1970s San Francisco and his in-your-face-in-the-moment approach. Gus doesn't just make you watch the movie, he wants you to feel it.I saw the the film at a New York Times LGBT Affinity Group screening in Chelsea and the packed theater was nothing short of a tear fest near the end. If you're one of those guys that doesn't let his eyeballs mist in public, then I suggest you wait until the DVD release. All emotion aside, the flick stays true to the book The Mayor of Castro Street by Randy Shilts, on which much of it is based.
I must say, I was a little disappointed that there was (once again) no mention of the significant contributions gay people of color made to the gay rights movement (after all, it was kids of color–mostly trans–that started Stonewall) and the fact that the only Hispanic character in the film (Diego Luna as Jack Lira) was a lunatic. But, overall, Milk is good for all gays to see, if only to feel what it was like to be gay in the 60's and 70's.
Since the film is only showing at select theaters across the country (must our more rural LGBTers always be neglected?), I've created this gallery of stills for your viewing pleasure, courtesy of the folks over at Special Ops Media.
