On February 1, social democrat Jóhanna Sigurdardóttir swept to power in Iceland, becoming the first openly LGBT national leader in the modern era and Iceland's first female Prime Minister. The 66-year-old Left-Green party leader ends 18 years of conservative leadership and signifies a stronger role for women in the Icelandic government. According to Times Online, voters blamed the previous conservative government for driving the country into bankruptcy, leaving room for change and more progressive leadership. Jóhanna Sigurdardóttir was Iceland's longest-serving member of Parliament.
Since 1996, gay and lesbian Icelanders have been protected under registered partnerships. By 2000, between 25 and 30 thousand people either participated in or watched their annual gay pride parade. That's nearly 10 percent of the nations population.
