Follow me on:

  • I've replaced all my light bulbs with power-saving mini-flourescents = 80% savings on electricity bill

  • If I need to boil something on the stove, I boil the water in a kettle first then put that in the pot. It reduces the amount of electricity used to bring a pot of cold water up to boiling point and so saves money.

  • When possible, I walk to nearby shops instead of using my car, and don't drive unnecessarily. My driving style counts for a lot here too... Coasting in neutral where possible, and driving like an 'old lady' saves me on tires and other consumables. I've managed to cut my fuel monthly by about 20%

  • I've made arrangements with my creditors to pay a reduced installment, and they're all too willing to do this instead of getting nothing at all. I've cut the monthly load from my debt by half by doing this.

  • Cook from fresh, ready meals are expensive and not fulfilling. Re-use your teabags for a second cup.

  • Don't buy dusters. Run your knickers over a few surfaces on the way to the laundry bin.

  • Turn down the temperature on the washer.
These are some of the many money-saving tips members of our forum are putting into practice during this recession. Share your savings ideas in this forum thread.

(1) Will says:

If you have a ceiling light that has 2 bulbs, unscrew one just enough so it doesn’t come on.

Be sure to leave it in the light socket for safety reason.
