Senator Ted Kennedy (D-MA) lost his year-long battle with brain cancer Tuesday evening. He was 77-years-old.

Kennedy, the brother of President John F. Kennedy and former U.S. Attorney General and Senator Robert Kennedy, was a longtime champion of gay rights, serving under 10 presidents in his 50 year Senate career. The legislative "Lion of the Senate," as he was called, saw more than 300 bills he authored enacted into law.

Kennedy was a committed advocate of health care, education, civil, women's and LGBT rights. He voted against the 1996 Defense of Marriage Act; to include sexual orientation in federal hate crime laws; for an equal and trans-inclusive federal Employment Non-Discrimination Act; the Ryan White AIDS Care Act; and was working to introduce a bill to repeal the military's ban on gay personnel, Don't Ask, Don't Tell.

Senator Ted Kennedy was the last surviving brother in the Kennedy political family.
