The Kansas City Chiefs barred running back Larry Johnson from all team activities pending investigation for anti-gay slurs he made during a heated Twitter discussion about Chiefs head coach Todd Haley. The following day, Johnson directed another anti-gay comment toward a reporter.
Gay media watch organization GLAAD called on the NFL and the team to severely reprimand Johnson and for the two-time Pro Bowler to apologize. Johnson's agent issued an a statement Tuesday expressing the player's regret. He apologized to Haley, the team, fans and the league; however gays were not explicitly mentioned.
"I regret my actions. The words were used by me in frustration, and they were not appropriate," Johnson stated through a spokesman. "I did not intend to offend anyone, but that is no excuse for what I said."
Thirty-year-old Johnson signed a five-year contract extension in 2007 that included $19 million guaranteed and could be worth up to $45 million.
