Gay couples twice as likely to be uninsured

By , About.com Guide   December 15, 2009

Follow me on:

Vice President Joe Biden warned lawmakers today that time is running thin for a decision on health care reform.

What's the hold up? Well, the Dems have struggled to secure the 60 votes they need in the Senate. And the 60th vote happens to be Senator Joe Lieberman.

While the clock is ticking, I thought I'd pull some stats on the gay uninsured. Here's what I found:

A 2006 study by research director and economist M. V. Lee Badgett, showed that 20 percent of people with same-sex partners are uninsured.

Early 2009 research entitled "Poverty in the Lesbian, Gay and Bisexual Community" by The Williams Institute at the UCLA School of Law also found that lesbian, gay, and bisexual Americans are more likely to be poor than heterosexuals. One of the causes: higher rates of the uninsured.

Gay Life favorite Rod 2.0 is keeping up updated on Lieberman and the health care debate.
More after the jump.
