"The number two reason that kids are bullied is due to their perceived sexual orientation," says Dr. David Hall, creator of Bullyshield, a new iPhone app created to help kids who've been bullied in school.

"The number one reason is appearance (which can include perceived sexual orientation and gender identity as well as other issues)," Hall continues.

Bullying is being described as a national crisis, often leading to teen suicide. Many local districts are launching anti-bullying campaigns to help combat the growing problem.

Earlier this month, the Massachusetts legislature passed anti-bullying legislation following the deaths of 15-year-old Phoebe Prince of South Hadley and 11-year-old Carl Joseph Walker-Hoover, believed to have committed suicide because of bullying. The new law would prohibit bullying at school, including cyber bullying through text and email.

The new app, Bullyshield, helps students work through bullying and develop action plans if they've been victims. The app also provides resources for parents and teachers.
