Gay couple, 25-year-old Sandip and partner of six years, 28-year-old beautician Nikhil, wed on Thursday in the first same-sex ceremony held in Manipur, India.
According to Indo-Asian News Service, Sandip and Nikhil exchanged bouquets in front of a "modest gathering" at a public hall.
Homosexuality in India is widely considered taboo. However, sexuality in general is rarely discussed openly. Neither the Hindu Marriage Act or Hindu religion define marriage in terms of gender.
On July 2, 2009, a Delhi High Court court decriminalized consensual sex between gay men by repealing Section 377 of the India's Penal Code.
