Recap: United States of Tara Season 2, Ep. 2

The lights continue to flicker in Marshall's closet as episode two of United States of Tara, season two takes off.

After three months without a transition, Tara slips after secretly touring the suicidal neighbor's home. Meanwhile, Marshall continues to struggle with his sexuality. Out and proud Lionel isn't holding any punches, either. He wants Marshall to accept the truth, but Marshall hasn't quite answered the big gay question for himself yet.

Rejected by the school administration over gay Sweetheart Day flowers, Lionel decides to form a Glib-ta, as he pronounces it, or a Gay, Lesbian, Bi, Transgender Association and isn't too keen on including straight allies. He belittles ally Courtney when she asks about straight inclusion.

Marshall chimes in with a suggestion that they add an "I" for "Independents" for those that choose not to identity, a perfect fit for someone like himself who isn't ready to come out. Later in the locker room Lionel lands on Marshall for backing off of his purple flower brigade and choosing "independence."

"You want this sh*t so bad, you dream about it Josiah," Lionel snickers to another student that calls them both fags in the locker room. Marshall sees his opportunity to strike back: "You ruin it for gay people, Lionel. You make being gay something no one would ever want to be. It's like you're asking for it. Like you live for it. You want Josiah Wertheimer to call you a fag."

Of course, Lionel has the last word: "Look, Marshall, you can pretend you're an 'I' or bi or exploring or discovering or whatever you want to call it, but look in the mirror dude. Check out your shorts. You very clearly ordered the gay size."

Clearly, the battle between Lionel and Marshall is reaching a boiling point. Maybe when all of the bridges fall, so will Marshall's own internal struggle.

Later, Marshall invites Courtney to his house for dinner, which leads to some serious kissing and rubbing. Is Marshall exploring his sexuality or is his roll-around with Courtney push back for a real attraction for Lionel?
