Ramon Johnson

A new gay character for Archie Comics

"We're not trying to send social messages," co-CEO Jon Goldwater said while announcing Archie Comics' new gay character. "We just want to reflect what's going on today. Riverdale's a melting pot."

Kevin Keller, Riverdale's new out pupil, is one of 50 new students transferring to Riverdale High this fall due to school closures. Kevin will be the first gay character Archie Comics has introduced since its inception in 1942. Expect his debut in No. 202 of Veronica Comics.

According to Victor Gorelick, editor in chief of Archie Comics, none of the talent working on the Kevin storyline is gay, so it'll be interesting how Kevin's story progresses.

What do you think about Archie's new gay character?

Good for them. Archie Comics and Josie and the Pussycats continue being groundbreaking and welcoming to all readers. They were one of the first comic books to feature an African American character. Now the comic books are groundbreaking again. It’s commendable that the writers decided to introduce Kevin.

Good for Archie Comics. Archie Comics and Josie and the Pussycats previously broke ground by introducing one of the first African-American comic book characters. They continue to be welcoming, non-violent, and all-inclusive comic books. I’m glad I used to read them.
