The New York State Senate approved a gay marriage bill that allows same-sex couples to legally tie the knot.

The measure was approved Friday night by a vote of 33 to 29, after a lengthy debate and support from Republicans who defected from bi-partisan politics. Gov. Cuomo, who promised to introduce and push through the bill, signed it into legislation right after the vote.

Full legal marriage was a major victory for New Yorkers who have seen previous gay marriage attempts stall in the New York legislature. Frustrated heightened when former Gov. James Paterson granted marriage benefits to out-of-state same-sex couples in 2008, but not native New Yorkers.

But, today political stalemates are left behind, making New York the sixth state to legalize gay marriage in America. GLBTer and supporters celebrated in the streets of New York after the decision was announced. Couples can begin marrying in 30 days.
