On “Scruff” I feel like a kid again! A kid in a sweet & furry candy shop.

Nobody cares about Growler and it SUCKS anyway! They just came along and copied Scruff. Scruff is the BEST!

(4) Ali says:

I love scruff. However, all the guys they display as the opening image are the same generic white guy. Some diversity would be nice.

Scruff is just the best app ever. There’s no reason to think twice. Easy, simple, intuitive, everything we need for meetimg guys all around the world

I am so glad Grindr is not doing well in this poll, they promote themselves to be nominated for these things and push people to vote for them but what they provide compared to Scruff and Boyahoy is total pants! One photo, no search option and no chat history. Worst app of its genre but most aggressively promoted.

(9) Fuzzybear says:

Love Growlr. Used to love $cruff until they began to charge way too much for basic functions. Same guys are in both places. Growlr doesn’t extort money out of you even in the free version. If you make a donation, you get more features and their pricing is spot on.

If $cruff would revamp their pricing to something more reasonable they would become a favorite again. Losing all chats and saved pictures unless you pay $10+ / month is extortion. Is this amount to pay for Johhny $cruff’s new haircuts, trips, and drinks for everybody in the bar?

March 14, 2012 at 9:50 pm
(10) Thomas says:

Poor cheap copycat Growlr must be sooo jealous of SCRUFF and their success – and their hokey donation model just displays how unconfident they are in their product.

Even the douche Growler founder Coley yelled at his customers for not giving the app good reviews. FAIL!

(11) Bear says:

GROWLr. The Bears are much hotter there than on Scruff.

March 15, 2012 at 6:46 pm
(12) Nastypup says:

I am also one of those that really likes Growlr – where is it on the list???

Growlr isn’t a copycat, it is a superior app. Private pictures, customized growls, shouts. Your history doesn’t get deleted and you don’t lose pictures other people send you. They stay on your phone as long as you don’t reinstall the software on your iPhone.

Funny how Scruff doesn’t allow you to keep your own history and pictures sent without paying a ton of money to Johhny Scruff. His arms are looking big and buff on the latest picture on Facebook – glad the donations are helping him pay a trainer to beef up so he can look like one of the blue-dotted profiles that exemplify what being a bear means: buff, beautiful, shallow, and judgemental. Your latest slam against Growlr shows how insecure you are. Big muscles and more money won’t help you there. Self-esteem comes from within. The developer or Growlr doesn’t hide behind a phony name either, so that alone instills more trust and confidence in the developer and their ethics.

I agree with Fuzzybear – scruff has the potential to be the best iPhone app out there but a)price it so it isn’t astronomically expensive and b) add better features like Growlr has and c) even if you have free people using the app, don’t delete all their chat history and picture exchanges. That is just downright rude.

Grindr was first so in essence, Scruff copied Grindr, so stop being petty. Scruff copied Grindr.

(13) Jonny says:

Scruff is bull crap ran by arrogant snobs. Growlr actually WORKS for one thing and actually gives users FEATURES…..Scruff claims to be a bear app….but there are like 10 bears and a ton of pretty wannabe’s who think they are something, when they are nothing…..Growlr has quality while Scruff only worries about MONEY and QUANTITY….dam even the guy who founded Scruff isn’t a freakin bear….he is twink with a beard…..you boys or CHILDREN stay on Scruff while us MEN are on Growlr….little boys use pretty toys that cost to much

(14) Stephen says:

You know you’ve made it when your competition spends time talking crap about you. Congrats Johnny Scruff! What you’ve contributed to the Bear Community and LGBT community is unmatched.

Let those idiot Growlr folk continue to spew their hate and jealously – it makes them look like childish idiots in front of everyone.

March 16, 2012 at 8:26 pm
(15) Titus Aurelious says:

Stephen – have you even tried Growlr? The interface is clean and simple, has more functionality than any other gay cruising app out there, and the functionality isn’t crippled if you use the free version.

I started out on Grindr – boring twinks not much interaction.

Then I tried Scruff – loved it until they crippled the message history in the free version. You keep on getting pop-ups that you have to pay for this and you have to pay for that. Considered it until I saw the prices. REALLY??? I would be willing to pay a modest amount but their current pricing structure is obscene. This soured me on the app.

Tried Growlr – at first it was boring, then they added great features like private pictures and growls – all for free. No crippleware as in the case of Grindr and Scruff. I am finding most of the people I talk to on Scruff are also on Growlr. I like being able to keep my entire chat/picture swapping history with a user on my phone. I think the other services store your messages and pictures on a server so they can charge you. I have ethical and privacy issues with that. I am probably going to upgrade Growlr since they have been really nice to free members and I support good software and karma.

Peace out,

(16) Brad says:

Wow this thread is hilarious. It’s pretty obvious that GROWLr is writing reviews here in their desperation to play catch up to SCRUFF.

I’ve used both and both are good – but SCRUFF is much better. Hotter guys and more features. Plus Johnny does a lot more for the community.

Growlr hasn’t done anything other than play cry baby to the little members that they have. Totally lost respect for them after that.

Congrats Johnny Scruff!

(17) Shane says:

My friends refer to Growlr as the bitter bear app.

The hotter bears use Scruff, hands down.

Both are good depending on what you like. Scruff crashes much less on my phone.

(18) D says:

I have used grindr, growlr, and scruff and find all three kind of boring. Scruff to me is by far the worst of them. I actually just deleted that crappy app. Grinder just lacks the bears but it is easier to use. I have to say the growlr is the best one that I have used so far, but they do need some work to do. I really could care less of who wins.

This (Gtindr) re-affirms that the Los Angeles basin is full of cheap, arrogant, ignorant childish brats!

I’ve only been on for 5 days and been a perfect outgoing gentlemen (at least I think I have) and been blocked for the following.

Blocked on the basis that, I could not host.

Blocked on the basis that, I would not “pick up” a party at their address, who had no stats posted (he looked barely 18) and would not share any of such information (for which I asked nicely).

Blocked on the basis that, a guy wrote in his about comments that he didn’t understand this application and then went on to close the about comments with the statement “and NO QUEERS”. I tried to kindly explain that this is attracts a predominately gay clientele and he should try to be more tolerant.

Blocked on the basis that, I politely asked, “why do you request SEVERAL pictures up front be sent before you will ‘chat’ with another party?

YES Grindr is trying to PUSH it’s users to vote it best “Gay Ap” on About.com with “pop up” push notifications to our phones.

(24) BubbaDick says:

I feel that Growlr is better than Scruff and that it is unfair that they are not included in this poll . Scruff started out really great, but has now gotten greedy and wants to charge for things that were free before, while the app itself has gone downhill. Constantly not getting notifications or push messages and having to kill the app and restart it to receive messages or Woofs. I know the issue is not with my phone, because I’ve spoken with others that have experienced the same problems.

I agree with other posters – if there is no Growlr app on the list, I won’t vote for any of the listed ones. This voting is just not fair.. People voting for the best from worst, it’s awkward! Put Growlr on the list and start all over again!!!

Hey guys,

Some of you are asking why Growlr is not on the list. To answer, there was an open nominations phase that ran last month. The list you see here are the top 5 apps nominated by popular vote.

(30) Gr1zz says:

Another one that should be here but isn’t is U4Bear. Available on iOS, Android, and anything with a web browser, it allows as many photos as you want, and, while it’s full of hot Spanish bears, the number of “locals” is growing.

Scruff sent me here to vote, the GrowlR pop-ups are annoying, Nd I know of people who have had to create new profiles after software updates to their phones! My one U4Bear profile works on my Android phone, iPad, and desktop machine, and while it’s not perfect yet, it shows promise.

I’ll likely check out the others listed here, but will save my vote for the updated list.

It might also be a good idea to let voters rank them in order, rather than just vote or the favorite. The resulting data would be much more interesting, especially since it would show how many of these were tried.

(31) swimmercub says:

I liked when Grindr wasn’t so popular and there were a bunch of different guys on there and they really had a diverse population of guys hopping on looking to get off together. Then it got popular and the twinks and muscle maries took over.

Then came along Scruff as an alternative to that and, at first, it was where all the bears were. Then it got popular and any twink and muscle mary with a goatee claiming to be bears ransacked it (and continue to) with their body fascism and bulls#!t. The hierarchy with the blue dots didn’t help. Oh, and then Scruff started to charge for features and that was ridiculous. But, hey, someone needed to figure out a way to pay their rent in New York, right?

Somewhere in the mix was GROWLr. I’m sure as much as everyone seems to be rooting for that app, it’ll soon go the way of Grindr and Scruff and be deemed useless and sh!tty as time goes by.

If I saw a young girl feeling the need to pose in her panties and bra to get a date, I would think it sad. I would even suggest she might have some esteem issues. But in the homosexual community, posing in your underwear to meet new people or pointing at your muscles is considered the norm.

Very, very messed up, and sadly, very common.

Are there any gay apps for dating?? Most of them eventually get taken over by the sex addicts. I don’t want to meet a bear, or a twink, or a jock, or a gay guy who is socially awkward. I just want to meet a normal, down-to-earth, fully clothed, guy. This seems so very, very rare for homosexuals.

(42) Tom of Finland says:

Let’s be very clear here. Scruff is NOT a bear application.

Scruff is for TWINKS with beards.

There’s a HUGE difference between “Twinks with beards” and actual “bears.”

I much prefer Growlr because actual MEN use Growlr. Good luck finding an actual man on Scruff!

GROWLr craps on Scruff, it’s free and it works, what more can a guy want LOL.
