Last weekend, as Queen Elizabeth II celebrated her diamond jubilee, US and UK-based rugby players roughed up Manchester (and each other) in the Bingham Cup, the international gay rugby union tournament.

The tournament is named after 9/11 hero and Berkeley rugby star Mark Bingham. The Bingham Cup was first held in San Francisco in 2002 and traveled 5,000 miles to Manchester for 2012.

On the roster were rugby greats and gay activists Ben Cohen and Gareth Thomas. Cohen founded the StandUp Foundation which promoted inclusiveness in sports and promotes anti-bullying campaigns. Thomas, one of the most vocal and influential gay rights activists in the UK, was instrumental in bringing the cup to Manchester.

Check out this interview with Gareth Thomas about the event and these highlights from the second day of the cup.

The Sydney Convicts took home the Bingham Cup and Bingham Bowl Sunday against long-time rival San Francisco Fog.
