Washington Gay Marriages On Hold Until Nov. Ballot

What should have been lively cheers last Thursday in celebration of the day Washington's "everything but marriage" law took effect turned into uncertainty over the future of gay marriage in the state.

The measure, which grants same-sex couples "everything" in the bursary of marriage rights except the title, was passed by the Legislature and signed by Gov. Chris Gregoire earlier this year, but was put on hold to accommodate a voter petition known as Referendum 77 that strikes down the act. The secretary of state's office confirmed Tuesday that of the required 120,577 signatures, sponsors turned in 247,331.

With no surprise, the main benefactor of the referendum is Washington, D.C.-based National Organization for Marriage (NOM), who's pockets have traditionally been shown to run deep.

With the signatures, the referendum comes for a vote in the fall.

Oh yay…the hateful majority wishing to vote to take away the rights of the minority…again!

This is the group that would have voted against giving women the right to vote, against inter-racial marriage, against equal civil rights for African-Americans, and would have been pro-slavery if we went back a bit further.

When do I get to vote on these sorts’ “smearing of the institution of marriage” by divorce? You know, the marriages ending at over 50% divorce rates? How about we vote that divorce be made illegal?
