Comic books editions are released all the time. What makes this one special, however, is the history No. 51 made as soon as it went for sale.
In "Astonishing X-Men No. 51," openly gay hero Northstar marries his longtime partner, Kyle. The issue makes comic book history as a first for Marvel.
But to commemorate the event, Midtown Comics, the beacon of comic culture in New York City held a special event: the wedding of Scott Everhart, 39, and Jason Welker, 33, a couple from Columbus, Ohio.
The couple was chosen out of 50 applicants to marry on the landmark day. "They really stood out as super-fans," said Thor Parker, the social media and events director at Midtown Comics told City Room.
Welker says he met Everest on FindFred and two weeks later closed his account because he knew he'd found the one.
Wedding bells in New York were perfect for the couple, since their home state of Ohio prohibits gay marriage. Welker and Everest plan to hold a follow up ceremony for family and friends that could not make it to New York for the big day.
