Uganda to Ban NGOs That Support Gay Rights

In the latest of several anti-gay measures that have captured international media attention, Ugandan officials have announced plans to ban NGOs that are thought to support gay rights from the country's registry.

While a bill outlawing the "promotion" of homosexuality in Uganda is working its way through the legislature, Ethics Minister Simon Lokodo told Reuters that the east African country plans to ban 38 organizations that they believe are using funds from overseas to support gay rights causes in Uganda

The names of the organizations haven't been released, but neither has any concrete evidence in support of the government's claims.

Last year, government officials in Uganda snubbed efforts by the United Kingdom to thwart open attacks on African gays and lesbians. The UK threatened to deny aid to countries it felt violated human rights principles. Uganda receives near £70 million annually from Britain, but insisted that it would not be bullied by the UK into lessening its stance on gay rights.

I’d like to see U.N. sanctions against this asshole of a nation!
