Happy, and not so gleeful, news on the gay marriage front: A voter initiative in Washington State to define marriage as between one man and one woman has failed to gain enough signatures to make it to the November ballot.
While this initiative has failed, another, separate voter initiative, known as Referendum 77, was successful in June. It will be on the November ballot.
Same-sex couples were supposed to be allowed to marry in June, but the start date was put on hold until November because of this petition.
The gay marriage struggle in Washington is being clogged by multiple voter initiatives with similar purposes. Both voter initiatives seek to reverse gay marriage in Washington State. Together, however, confuse voters, which I have no doubt is part of the strategy.
Referendum 77, the initiative that will be on the ballot, asks voters to check "no" to repeal the existing gay marriage law. The failed initiative would have had voters check "yes" to limit marriage between one man and one woman.
