With majority of French people in support, French Prime Minister Jean-Marc Ayrault has announced a plan to legalize gay marriage and extend adoption rights to gay couples by 2013.
By then, France will become the ninth European country, behind Belgium, Denmark, Iceland, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Spain and Sweden, to legalize same-sex marriage.
France already has protections for gay and lesbian couple through civil partnerships, but rights are limited. The new law would open them to the full benefits of marriage.

You missed the UK as a European country where same sex marriage is legal.
