The words "homo" and "fag" were commonplace in the Aussie Rules locker room. It was definitely not a place player Jason Ball thought he could come out. That's all changed. Ball has not only come out publicly, but the reaction he got from teammates was better than expected.
Ball told the Sunday Age that the football club "felt like a really hostile environment" and feared that he'd be bullied, kicked off the team or be abused by fans if he came out. Ball said he "didn't know any footballers who were gay," so he could "only assume the worst."
Ball's fears were for naught. His teammates already figured out he was gay and stopped slinging gay slurs. He's using the opportunity to launch a change.org campaign to encourage the league to air an anti-homophobia ad at the Grand Final championship game.

Jason Ball is a courageous young man.
“Good on ya” Jason!
