$2.8M in 6 weeks. That's a heck of a lot of money in an impressively short amount of time. What's more impressive, or what I could say more encouraging, is how serious Washington's gay marriage supporters are taking the battle to preserve gay marriage in Washington.

The Public Disclosure Commission released Tuesday that thus far, Washington United for Marriage has raised $10 million in cash contributions, almost a third in six weeks. Washington United for Marriage is an organization that is advocating to uphold Washington's gay marriage law.

I've bickered in the past about how much money anti-gay campaigns manage to rustle up and how contribution dollars have a direct effect on public opinion. (Hey, we're American. We're influenced by ads, even political ones.) According to Seattle Times, Washington United for Marriage has spent more than $5 million on television ads and outgunned opposing campaign Preserve Marriage Washington by a cool million.

Why is it important to spread the message? In February Washington was to become the seventh US state to legalize gay marriage behind New York. But the measure was put on hold until November's election to let voters decide. This issue has had time to marinate in the minds of voters, who should be armed with as much information on the bill as possible. Washington United for Marriage is determined, and so are its supporters, to make sure the message of equality is loudest and the most pervasive.
