NEWS: Activist Sues Trinidad and Tobago Over Gay Entry Ban

By November 28, 2012

Follow me on:

Maurice Tomlinson, a Jamaican national and legal adviser for the NGO AIDS-Free World, is suing the government of Trinidad and Tobago over their immigration policy which prohibits people identified as gay, those with mental health issues and physical disabilities from entering the country.

Gaystarnews.com reports that Section 8 of Trinidad and Tobago's immigration law states that 'entry into Trinidad and Tobago ... is prohibited [to]:

(a) persons who are idiots, imbeciles, feeble-minded persons, persons suffering from dementia;
...

(c) persons who are dumb, blind or otherwise physically defective, or physically handicapped;

(d) people with criminal convictions;

(e) prostitutes, homosexuals or persons ... suspected as coming to Trinidad and Tobago for these or any other immoral purposes;

(f) persons who are reasonably suspected of attempting to bring into Trinidad and Tobago or of procuring prostitutes or other persons for the purpose of prostitution or homosexual or other immoral purposes;'

Tomlinson says unless he lies, he cannot enter the country to attend a United Nations HIV workshop and a conference on human rights. He refuses to do so and instead has decided to take action against what he says is a restriction against his freedom of movement within the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) conference on human rights.

With laws & policies such as with Trinidad & Tobago, how on earth are they eligible to host a conference on human rights, & a United Nations HIV workshop. As a proud Canadian, I think also, that they, along with Jamaica; should be ousted from the Commonwealth. Many years ago,Canadian Prime Minster John Diefenbaker lead the endeavor to have South Africa kicked out of the Commonwealth,after they passed the laws of apartheid, & was successful. Then, years later, when those oppressive laws were overturned, It was with great joy that Nelson Mandela was given honorary Canadian citizenship. Jamaica is also infamous for their hesitancy in prosecuting sex crimes against heterosexual tourists, (usually the rape of women.)The Caribbean appears to be a basket case when it comes to human rights; especially for LGBT people, including those spending money through tourism. I will henceforth discourage anyone from traveling to Trinidad & Tobago , for whatever good it will do. But some effort is better than no effort at all.
