Most governments recognize and even reward heterosexual marriages with hundreds and in many cases thousands of marriage benefits. Heterosexual marriage benefits range from tax breaks to certain legal protections. And even though same-sex couples live in similar arrangements, these benefits are not extended to them nor is their union recognized by most laws.
Vermont is the only state in America that recognizes same-sex unions by law. Vermont's civil union legislation adds validity to the union between gays and lesbians and helps them care for each other and their children under the protection of the law. However, it still falls short of full protection under marriage laws. The push to legalize gay marriage is gaining momentum throughout the entire United States. Activist groups hope that the United States will follow the lead of Canada, which has legalized same-sex marriage for gays.
Recognition and equality are at the forefront of the same-sex marriage movement and gaining momentum. The message is clear that love and commitment between same-sex couples is the same as heterosexual couples and therefore should reap the same benefits.
