At the heart of the modern Gay Rights Movement is the fight for marriage equality. Across the globe, cities, states and entire nations are recognizing the rights of LGBT people to form families under the protection of the law. Here is where same-sex marriage stands in Germany:
9/1/01: German same-sex couples are allowed to register as life partners under the Life Partnership Act. Registered couples do not receive the full benefits of marriage.
10/12/04: Rights to registered partners were expanded to include second parent adoption and simpler alimony and divorce rules. Tax benefits were not included in the expansion.
