Steven's Coming Out Story
Tragedy and Happiness

From Steven Scott Naimo, for About.com

On July 16th, 2006 (my birthday no less) I decided come out. I was so sick of not being me; I never seemed to enjoy life. I knew whom I was and was sick and tired of everyone telling me I was someone different.

To my father I was going to be the next star football player for the Patriots; and to my mother I was going to be Gods gift to singing (I have 26 first place medals in solo singing, stage and Broadway musicals-High School). I had enough of everyone's hell.

I told my mother I didn’t want that life when she announced me as her “star angel" to about 60 of my family members. I then looked at my dad and said, “Nor do I want to be a football player!” Then suddenly I said it! I admitted I was gay in front of every family member in my bloodline.

The pressure fell off my shoulders. I felt like I could fly until my mother asked my father for a divorce not 3 minutes after I screamed it. I never felt more furious in my life.

My family was sitting around the table when I came down from my bedroom the next day. They decided to talk to me about being gay. They asked if I was sure and what made me this way? My mother explained that she’s known for years, but had been waiting for this moment in my life to ask my father for a divorce.

My father used to beat her and then hit me. He told me I was worthless and then slapped me again. That night my mother and me packed up and took off.

All those years my mother suffered for me, because she knew what would happen. And only a mother’s love can make you feel like you’re on top of the world.

I am happy to say that I’m heading off to college next year to study fashion design and architectural formation. My mother has been my inspiration. As for my father, I haven’t talked to him in a year. The years I missed hating the world and feeling self-conscience really affected me, but now I couldn’t be happier.
