Live @ Roxy 4: Peter RauhoferStar 69 Records
The Bottom Line
DJ Peter Rauhofer returns to the raw sounds of old school mega clubs with tracks dominated by lows and complimented- but not overwhelmed- by fun vocals. Unlike his first tribute to the famed New York City club, Live @ Roxy Volume 4 plays more like a snapshot of a fun few hours on tables instead of a mere compilation of Peter's favorite tracks. For gay guys that like hard beats and dark sounds without the hassle of skipping around to random tracks, Live @ Roxy Volume 4 is a must buy.
Pros
  • Brings big club sound to your car stereo or headphones.
  • Great CD for entertaining. Plays all the way through.
Cons
  • Slightly different vibes between Disk 1 and Disk 2.
Description
  • 4th installment in the Live@Roxy series.
  • 2 disk compilation.
  • Special remixes of Madonna's Mother & Father and Seal's Killer.
Guide Review - Gay Dance Music Review
It's been 11 months, 28 days and 11 hours since I wore out the dance floor at New York City's famed club, Roxy, but the latest compilation by resident DJ Peter Rauhofer brought me full circle. The first installment of this series, Live@Roxy had new compilation appeal but was mainly driven by a careful selection of popular club tracks. The tracks carried enough weight, though, that I easily ignored the lack of continuity.

So, imagine my surprise when I popped Live@Roxy 4 in my CD deck. Not only do the tracks blend seamlessly, but the energy builds as the CD progresses- further simulating a club feel.

The folks at Star 69 have also figured out that the boys already come to the club ready to party, making warm ups necessary. No time for stretching, just get to business. CD One of Live@Roxy 4 starts out with the original mix of DJ Rooster & Sammy Peralta, which despite a 30 second intro moves directly into classic New York beats and simple vocals. By the time track 4 arrives (I Like It by Decibel feat. La Veetra) the nostalgia of classic deep house saturates me.

All in all, the differences in quality and sound from Live@Roxy to Live@Roxy 4 is like the dramatic change in direction between the first Batman movie and the newest Batman Begins flick, which makes a sophisticated adult action film out of a cute kids comic book fantasy. Live@Roxy 4 ain't no slap-stick theater ready cartoon. This one goes back to year one- the inception of a great DJ and the return of the classic club set.
