Ramon: When and how did you guys meet?
Nick: We met at college. I was actually sitting at a basketball game with some friends and he sat by me with some of his friends. I instantly felt an attraction to him and kind of knew he liked me. Our college, however, is in a small town and so the gay community is rather sparse. Thus, I did not get my hopes up. However, we hit it off and started hanging out. Pretty soon it came out that we both were gay and we have been together ever since. We, like all couples, have had our problems but for the most part we have been inseparable.
Ramon: What was it like the first time you took each other home to meet the parents?
Nick: My parents are very religious and I had already painfully broken them in to the fact that I was gay. They have come to accept it after years of tears and hatred. I have a pretty good relationship with them now and so I am not shy about bringing men home to see them, so Greg was no different. Greg has a great personality and so they hit it off immediately. In fact, he now enjoys going to see them more than I do. As for Greg's parents, they also are very religious and feel that what Greg is doing is "of the devil" and "not approved of God," so I have met them and shaken their hand but I have never actually had a conversation with them. I wish I had because it sounds as if they are wonderful folks. When will the bias end? I doubt I'll see it in my lifetime. Greg and I will continue to work on them and hopefully someday they will come to see me as they see their other son's and daughter's in laws—just a person who loves their child and respects them.
Ramon: What was the most romantic gift you've ever given each other?
Nick: I think the most romantic gift Greg got for me was some ticket's to Wicked in Chicago. I am a huge Broadway fan and he knows that, so one day he bought us both tickets and we spent a night in Chicago at an elegant hotel (with a jacuzzi in the room). We had a very nice dinner and Wicked was terrific.
As far as the romantic gift I've given Greg: He says it was when I rented out my parents cabin (which sits right on a huge reservoir) during the dead of winter. We stayed up all night snow mobiling and playing games. I think we got to know each other more on that trip than we have on any other trip that we have taken.
