British film filmmaker, artist, and author Derek Jarman (1942 - 1994) directed several experimental shorts, feature films, and music videos.

Jarman was born in Northwood, Middlesex into a military family. His father was a military officer. Jarman studied at the Slade School of Art, University College London. He came out at age 16 and often talked about his struggles being openly gay in the 50s and 60s in his memoirs. He was diagnosed with HIV on December 22, 1986 and died of AIDS-related complication at age 52.

Jaram had a treasured career in filmmaking. He was first known as a stage designer, but went on to direct experimental shorts and feature films. His repertoire includes Caravaggio (1986), The Angelic Conversation (1987), The Last of England (1988), and War Requiem (1989) starring actor Laurence Olivier in his last performance.

Jarman also directed the 1989 Pet Shop Boys as well as videos for The Smiths and The Sex Pistols. His autobiography Dancing Ledge was republished in 2010.
