After a near death overdose, Russell T Davies left Manchester's gay scene behind, sobered up, and began working on the infamous gay cable series Queer As Folk, which spun off into U.S. and Canadian versions.
After the international run, Davies—born Stephen Russell on 27 April 1963—set off in a new direction, writing other popular BBC series, including the sci-fi revival Doctor Who. With other success under his belt, like Torchwood: Miracle Day and The Sarah Jane Adventures, Davies has come full circle and is said to be in development of a new gay series for Showtime called Cucumber.
