About John Waters:

John Waters, born April 22, 1946, grew up in Baltimore, MD. In the 1960's he began making short films which he screened at various places in Baltimore.

John Waters' First Break:

After making a name for himself in the Baltimore art scene as the "Pope of Trash" with numerous shocking short films, John Waters captured the attention of cult fans with "Pink Flamingos" (1972), a story about a family of rednecks and a pair of swingers battling for the title of "The Filthiest People Alive." The film received endless criticism for a graphic dog feces eating scene.

John Waters' Hairspray:

"Hairspray" became a crossover classic and later a Broadway hit, captured in the traditional witty and flamboyant Waters style. Hairspray will join the big screen musical phenomenon in 2007. Pre-production credits include John Travolta.

All of John Waters' films are set in Baltimore with frequent cast members Patricia Hearst and Mink Stole. Water's sense of humor and obsession with gore and the avant garde began when he was a child and continue throughout his adult years. In a recent interview he states, "If I could go to the gym to be get the body of a junkie then I'd go." He is said to have grown his pencil thin mustache in honor of Little Richard (IMDb).
