The History of Gay Rights
The Gay Rights Movement

By , About.com Guide

Did you know that the gay rights movement started in 1965?

On July 4, 1965, 40 gays and lesbians held a demonstration in front of the Liberty Bell at Independence Hall in Philadelphia.

These demonstrations took place annually from 1965 to 1969, eventually expanding to Washington D.C. and New York. The growing movement has been credited with setting the stage for Stonewall and gay pride parades.
