2006 GLBT Ballot Initiatives

There were a number of anti-gay marriage initiatives on ballots during the 2006 mid-term elections. Here are the results of the proposed same-sex marriage bans:

Arizona
Proposition 107, called the 'Protect Marriage Amendment', will take away domestic partnership benefits currently offered in Phoenix, Tucson, Scottsdale and Tempe. Learn more about this Arizona amendment.
  Result: Failed

Colorado
Referendum I will provide basic legal rights to committed same-sex couples, although it is not full marriage. Learn more about this Colorado initiative.
  Results: Legalize Domestic Partnerships- Failed; Ban Same-Sex Marriage- Passed

Idaho
Proposed constitutional amendment to define marriage as between a man and woman, barring any form of domestic partnerships, civil unions or gay marriage. Learn more about this Idaho amendment.
  Result: Passed

South Carolina
The failed 2004 ballot initiative returns with the same purpose: A constitutional amendment denying gay and lesbian families any form of legal recognition, rights, responsibilities, or protections.
  Result: Passed

South Dakota
Proposed constitutional amendment denying gay and lesbian families any form of legal recognition, rights, responsibilities, or protections.
  Result: Passed

Tennessee
Proposition 1 is a constitutional amendment defining marriage as between a man and woman.
  Result: Passed

Virginia
Vague ballot intiative solidifying the already banned gay marriage.
  Result: Passed

Wisconsin
Ballot initiative permanently denying same-sex marriage rights and civil unions (which also affects heterosexual couples). Learn more about this Wisconsin amendment.
  Result: Passed
