Trying to find the perfect Valentine's Day gift for your man? Of course there are the standards: pre-packaged cologne sets, plush animals, chocolates... But will they produce the romantic wow you're looking for?

Romance comes from the heart, but it's born from thought. In order to get the gasp of excitement you're looking for, give him the gift he didn't think you knew he wanted (or needed).

The perfect Valentine's Day gift idea for him is just a few steps away:

Step 1: Look
Go on a spy mission in his closet, on his desk, or around the house. Now, keep in mind this is not a stalker mission and your charge is not to snoop, but rather observe. Look for the holes. Not in the walls or his pockets; the holes in his wardrobe, office gadgets, or his hobbies. What doesn't he have?

Step 2: Listen
If he's a man, more than likely he loves talking about himself. Don;t be surprised. Us guys are just as likely to gab about what's going on in our lives as women are. Some of us are just more subtle about it. The next time he goes on a rant about his wants, his needs or his frustrations, give him a few minutes of ear time. If you listen close enough, he's likely to disclose dozens of gift ideas. Is he stressed at work? Sounds like a spa package might be a great idea. Does he have a side love affair with a hobby? Pay for his day on the slopes or in the bowling alley or for a cooking class. Listen and you shall receive the perfect gift idea.

Step 3: Learn
Learn what will give him a Cupid tickle by recruiting his friends to action. Solicit their help with ideas or things he's talked about that he wants or needs. Take his BFF on a shopping date. Let him or her help you pick out the best scent or the perfect jacket or the most romantic couples get away. Not only will his friends give you good insight, but you'll get brownie points when they go back and tell him how much effort you put into buying his gift.

Now that you've been pointed into a gift buying direction, follow these Valentine's Day gift buying tips:

Tip 1: Get Him What He Wants, Not What You Think He Wants
I'm a firm believer in getting him what he wants, not what you think would be best for him. Those types of self-improvement gifts are great for non-holiday surprises, but for the major dates keep it positive and fresh.

Tip 2: Spice Up The Practical
Now, these gift ideas may seem a bit practical for the most romantic of holidays, but the swagger is all in the packaging. Spice your gift up with rose petals in the gift box or pair the new sports gear you bought him with a complimentary pair of edible undies. How about his favorite cologne wrapped in a hand written love letter? Get creative and think outside the standard plastic wrapped chocolates. Even the less creative of us can give the most heart throbbing of gifts when you mix the romantic with the practical.
