A mess plus a mess always equals a mess of a relationship! If you've got a lot going on in your life and he does as well, then you may experience a whirlwind of drama as you both try and sort out your own issues. The same holds true even if neither of you have dealt with relationship or personal issues of the past.
You should never look for a partner to fix your current situation or think that by having a boyfriend any self-esteem issues, feelings of loneliness or depression will go away. A boyfriend should compliment and enhance your life, not compensate for what's missing.
Before you can enter into (or continue) in a healthy relationship, you have to work on yourself, which may call for counseling, talks with friends or some time alone to figure things out.
On the flip side, no guy or relationship is perfect. You can both work on things together if you stay open and communicate.
