Homoerotic (Homoeroticism)

By Ramon Johnson, About.com

Definition:

Term used to depict same-sex sensuality, sex and desire in cinema, poetry, literature, theatre or art. Since the term homosexual was not used to describe same-sex love until the mid-20th century, homoeroticism and homoerotic works did not necessarily represent homosexual relationships and sexual acts prior to that time. Close same-sex friendships or subtle innuendos (not necessarily sex) portrayed in cinema, poetry, literature, theatre and art can be dated back to ancient Greek and Roman society. This argument has been used against notions that the same-sex sensuality used in Leonardo da Vinci's and Caravaggio's (and other early artists') works were homoerotic or represented their sexuality.

Homoeroticism vs. Pornography:
It is said that homoeroticism elicits an emotional response that triggers the imagination, much to the contrary of pornography that displays explicit sex.
