Mark Cichocki, R.N., About.com's Guide to HIV/AIDS, brings to light an alarming HIV/AIDS statistic: "Women of color account for 79 percent of all new infections among women 13 to 19 years of age, and 75 percent among women 20 to 24 years of age." (read more)

Mark Cichocki continues, "Those who identify as transgender make up a segment of our population that has an extremely high rate of HIV infection. While making up 1% to 5% of the general population the transgender community has an HIV infection rate that some experts estimate as low as 15% and as high as 60%." (read more)

An excerpt from the ABC Special Out of Control: AIDS in Black America states, "Prisons have AIDS infection rates five times higher than outside the walls, and many men go into prison HIV negative and come out infected, often without knowing it, since there is no comprehensive national testing, prevention, or treatment program for prison and jail inmates."
