Interview with Carson Kressley

Carson Kressley

Fashion maven Carson Kressley takes us on a tour of gay pride, his 1960's vinyl dollhouse and his new fashion line, Perfect.

QVC now features your clothing line, Perfect, which you describe as "rich outerwear pieces, including bomber jackets, touring coats and vests that pair effortlessly with pullover sweaters." So, I take it you prefer layers to skin...?

Well that would depend on who is wearing the clothes! Some people should show more skin than others. All kidding aside, the real point of the clothing line that I have designed for QVC is to provide people with great American sportswear pieces that can be worn together and mixed and matched for an easy, effortless style. Real basics that work a million different ways.

Did you have style as a kid or was it an evolutionary process?

Oh, did I ever! It wasn't good—but I had a look that's for sure. I distinctly remember wearing a double knit polyester leisure suit to my first day of kindergarten in 1975. It was grey and navy houndstooth with a navy blue ribbed turtleneck. It was very Michael Kors...or Don Knotts depending who you ask! Thanks Mom!

Your children's book, You’re Different and That’s Super, is about a pony that just doesn't fit in. If that story were turned into an animated film, whom would you want to play the lead role?

Me! I could use the cash! No really, that's a good question, who would I cast? I guess Paul Lynn if he were still kicking...

Who's the funniest person you've ever met?

Ellen DeGeneres

Who's the least funny?

Donald Rumsfeld

If you could design your own gay pride float, what would it look like?

It would be a big martini glass with two hot guys and me in it splashing around...and it would be filled with a real martini! One can dream, can't one?

Who's the one person in the news that just doesn't get it?

That awful hateful stingy haired Ann Coulter...

Have you ever performed in drag?

Indeed! I have performed in many an impromptu drag show poolside in Fire Island. No matter what I wear, I always end up looking like Juliette Lewis. Not that that's a bad thing.

What was your favorite childhood toy?

A very fab, very mod 1960's vinyl dollhouse that folded up like a suitcase. Very chic very mid century... God I am sooo GAY!

What's the one thing you want that you know you just can't have?

World Peace and a Latin boyfriend. Hell, I'd be willing to settle for one our of the two!
