I like my happy hour fancies dark, with no ice. Ironically, just like like my beats. No watered down flavor; just the hard, direct approach, just like Superchumbo's Let's Go Chumbo!. This two-disk set is tailor made for the darkest corners of the floor, the deapest settings on the surround system signaling those subtle dance moves from the inner parts of the soul. The entire Let's Go Chumbo!set is down right dirty! But in that good devious kind of way only you, a couple of strangers and a select few friends know about.
Superchumbo, known as Tom Stephan by day, has deep roots that date back to Twisted Records. He now hails on Star 69 and excels where most DJ disks fall out of the booth. Superchumbo builds at an unexpected pace and reduces DJ set boredom with a mixture of unique sounds. Tracks of note include the Disk 1 leading "Lose Control" by Dark Mountain Group; "Fever Is Coming" by Anton Fielding & Tiny Sticks with its classic Star 69 riffs; Superchumbo's own down-right gritty "Dog"; and a surprise tail off (or tail up) by Gay Life favorites, Jeannie Hooper and D'Tone.
It does seem a little odd that Disk 2 kick starts with another mix of "Dog." This is only a minor annoyance since the different mixes are equally as hot. 'Chumbo has also taken fan comments to heart. This time around the mix flows seamlessly without track breaks.
Let's Go Chumbo! is one of the best mixes I've heard in a while, especially as a listener that quickly gets bored at the mid-disk slump that plagues most CD sets. Superchumbo keeps my interest throughout both disks with his signature collection of favorite tracks. Long live the 'Chumbo and the dark tribal track!
