Music is a window to the soul and it has the power to affect and reflect our moods and emotions. The year 2006 rounds off with major chart-toppers, celebrity buzz and a few underground hits. You might expect to see some of the artists on this top gay music chart, while others may surprise you. And even then, there are a few that can spark a movement through music.

1. Corrine Bailey Rae- Corrine Bailey Rae

This cross-continental beauty has the power to alter moods. Corrine Bailey Rae's sultry lyrics can calm even the most severe road rage and ease the overly anxious senses. The British artist was an instant hit in Europe and is spreading through the States like peace through voice. Don't let Corrine's mellow flow fool you- she's proof that power does come in small packages.

2. Justin Timberlake- FutureSex / LoveSounds

Justin didn't bring sexy back. It never went anywhere. With his sophomore solo hit, he just helps use realize that we just weren't doing it right. Once again, JT teams up with hit-maker Timbaland and features hot artists T.I., Will.I.Am of the Black Eyed Peas and Three Six Mafia. Song of note: "Lovestoned/I Think She Knows" with chorus lyrics "She's bad and she knows. I think that she knows" Justin once again got it all wrong: He's bad and I that he knows.

3. The Roots- Game Theory

The Philadelphia hip-hop group releases their seventh LP, Game Theory- this time teamed up with Malik B and Def Jam. The Roots are angry about the state of hip-hop music and the world today and it shows through this emotionally charged album. Game Theory carries heavy beats and seamless transitions. It provokes thought and the movement reminiscent of old school hip-hop.

4. Skye- Mind How You Go

Morcheeba is a European groupie maker in Europe, but they barely scratched the surface here in the States. After five successful group CD's, lead singer Skye Edwards goes solo with her first project "Mind How You Go." The brothers Godfrey may have been the brains behind Morcheeba, but Skye pulled the weight. Her solo venture is a knockout and worth the search to find. You'll impress your friends and lovers with this rare CD.

5. Kelis- Kelis Was Here

Die hard Kelis fans are mad as... well, let's just say they won't be sharing their milkshake anytime soon. Kelis, the self-proclaimed rock/hip hop star, went from a screaming underground diva to a Top 40 boss sensation. Cult fans are not happy seeming their best kept secret (for years) is now rocking the airways and the club speakers. Boasting about her milkshake was definitely not her first single and having hubby Nas blindfold her in her recent release, "Blindfold Me", won't be her last.

6. Sergio Mendes- Timeless

I risked my life for Sergio Mendes. No, I didn't take a bullet for the smooth Brazilian star or block a pack of wild fans; but I did stop a car blaring his latest release, Timeless, to inquire who made such beautiful music. Mendes's bossa nova and samba sounds collaborate seamlessly with the Black Eyed Peas, Stevie Wonder, Erykah Badu, John Legend and more. I wouldn't suggest jumping in front of moving vehicles to get this collection, but I highly recommend visiting your local music outlet.

7. Janet Jackson- 20 Y.O.

Janet could release 20 blank tracks and a 30-second interlude and I'd still buy her CD. 20 Years Old doesn't need a free pass, though. The empress is back at 40 years old and 20 years later with a light, but powerful CD executive produced by boyfriend Jermaine Dupri and long-time friends Kimmy Jam and Terri Lewis. Real or cosmetic, her midlife makeover is flawless. It holds its own in an industry full of executive quick hitters, so-called new classics and artists with stronger legs than lungs.

8. Raheem DeVaughn- The Love Experience

I first heard Raheem on VH1 Soul during a house cleaning session. I dropped the mop, sat silently and almost blew the surround sound speakers listening to his flagship track "You". Neo-Soul is the it music genre and Raheem Devaughn deserves recognition among front runners like Anthony Hamilton and Dwele. Raheem DeVaughn's first album is hands down one of the best R&B LP's of the year.

9. Gnarles Barkley- St. Elsewhere

Gnarles Barkley isn't the name of some deranged man- it's a group comprised of eclectic vocalist Cee-Lo and jagged soundmaker Danger Mouse. This duo's collaboration is more odd than the Clinton/Bush philanthropic team, but surprisingly just as effective. Esthetically, the Gnarles Barkley pair looks like the number 10, with Danger Mouse's weak frame and Cee-Lo's strong stance. Chances are you've never heard an album like this. Chances are equally great that you'll love it.

10. Beyonce- B'Day

Beyonce is like New York: You either love her or hate her. There's no in between. Well, as with any dichotomy, I choose my side and go with the fierce and fabulous Beyonce. A local radio host said it best, "If you can't find something on this CD to dance to, then something's wrong with you." Destiny's Diva may have a unique style and a misguided wardrobe, but the new queen proves that she can drive her own success.
