Hepatitis B and Gay Sex

By , About.com Guide

Definition:
Hepatitis B, or HBV, is a liver disease that can cause lifelong infection, scarring (cirrhosis) of the liver, liver cancer, liver failure and in some cases death. 30% of people infected with HBV have no symptoms. 15-25% of those chronically infected die of liver failure. The hepatitis D virus is usually a risk factor for those infected with hepatitis B.

Symptoms of Hepatitis B:
  • jaundice
  • fatigue
  • abdominal pain
  • loss of appetite
  • nausea, vomiting
  • joint pain
How is it transmitted?
HBV is transmitted through the blood from an infected person to an unaffected person. Blood can be transferred between partners through unprotected anal sex, oral sex or rimming.

Can it be prevented or treated?
You can protect yourself from Hepatitis B by getting a HBV vaccination prior to coming in contact with the virus. Keep in mind, 30% of those infected have no symptoms. Has your partner been vaccinated? Also, use a dental dam, saran wrap or a condom while rimming. Use a condom during anal sex and don't share personal care products like razors or toothbrushes until you are sure of your partner's status.
