The First Ever Bengaluru Gay Pride

By

The first gay and lesbian pride march in Bengaluru was held on on June 29,2008. Bengaluru (or Bengalore) is the capital of the Indian state of Karnataka and the third most populous city in India.

Homosexuality is illegal in India, punishable up to 10 years. The penal code, I.P.C. Section 377 dates back to the British colonial days.

The historic march in Bengaluru was held just days before arguments to repeal Section 377 were opened before the New Delhi High Court. Pride marches were also held in Calcutta and New Delhi.

"What can we say, at the end of the march so many of us felt elated. The feeling didn't go away for a few days," organizers from Bengaluru Pride stated on their website.
